Genesis 2:7-9; 2:15-25 Text



7 then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.


15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; 22 and the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, 24Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.

Verse 7

  1. What was the physical dimension of man made of?

  2. As a result, what is man's body associated with?

  3. Does this have any significance for the relationship that should exist between man and his environment? 

  4.  What was breathed into man? 

  5. Who breathed this into man? 

  6.  Why do you think this was done? 

  7.  As a result, who is the breath of life in man associated with? 

  8.  Does this have any significance for the relationship that exists between man and God?

  9. With the union of the material and the spiritual what does man become? 

  10.  Which is the most important part of man his body or his spirit? Why? 

  11.  What does this verse tell us about the relationship between God and man? In what way is it different from his relationship with all other aspects of creation?

  12.  Is man dependant on God? What should this teach us? 

  13.  Who is it that takes the initiative, man or God? 

  14.  What does this verse tell us about the plan of God for man?



    15. Verse 9


  15. This verse tells us "God made to grow" every tree. What does this tell us about how the creation develops after the initial steps of God "speaking" elements into existence? What has God set in motion? 

  16.  Why were all trees suited to man? How were they meant to cater for the needs of man? 

  17.  What two trees stand out from all the others? 

  18.  Why do you think they were placed in the middle of the garden? Do you think this has any symbolic value? 

  19.  Why tree "of life"? 

  20.  Why do you think the other tree is called "tree of the knowledge of good and evil".

  21. Did man at this stage not have knowledge of good and evil?

  22.  What was man meant to do in the garden of Eden? Was work a consequence of the "fall" or did it exist before that? 

  23.  "Till and keep it", what does this tell us about the relationship between man and the environment? Does the earth belong to man or to God? 



    24. Verse 16


  24.  What was God's first commandment? 

  25.  Was God's first commandment in his own interest or in the interest of man? Why do you think this is so? 

  26.  In this verse was any limit put on man's freedom? Was there a wide choice of trees for man (v. 9)? 

  27. How many trees were at his disposal? Only two trees or more than two?

  28.  Is there any limit to the freedom of man in this verse? Is this limit in man's own interest or in God's? 

  29. Why do you think the tree of "knowledge and evil" was not in the interest of man at this moment in time? Did man have any knowledge of good? Did he have any knowledge of evil? Why / why not?

  30. What is the result of evil?

  31. Man was created in the spiritual image of God. What is death related to principally? The death of what?

  32. Who establishes what is good and what is evil? God, man or circumstances? Why?

  33. Is the prohibition in this verse justified or not?

  34. What part of creation is God's greatest concern?

  35. Why do you think this was so?

  36. Did man deserve this in any way?

  37. What was not good for man?

  38. Why was man alone? Was he not in communion with God? What was lacking?

  39. What aspect of God's character does this verse show?

  40. What was God's first solution for man's being alone?

  41. He created "every" beast, "every" bird. What does the frequent repetition of "every" convey in these verses?

  42. By allowing man to name all the animals what did God effectively give to man? What was to be the relationship between man and the rest of creation?

  43. Was freedom of choice given to any other creature? Why not? What differentiates man from the animals. What characterises the relation of man to God?

  44. What meaning does the naming of the animals have? What was the relation between man and the animals?

  45. Why do you think man was still not complete? Did he not have the company of numerous animals? Was he not in communion with nature? With God?

  46. The fact that woman was taken from a part of man is significant. Why?

  47. What does the creation of woman for man reveal about the relation between God and his creation?
